A SONG FOR MY MOTHER

KatMartinA Song for My Mother, the second book in my Dreyerville series, is a gift-sized hardcover out for Mother's Day. A Song for My Mother and The Christmas Clock are very different from my other books; they are both sweet novellas inspired by the small town of Ionia, Michigan, while my other novels are historical, paranormal or contemporary romance. A Song for My Mother is more about old-fashioned values, the days when honesty, courage, loyalty and integrity were more valuable than they seem to be today. In contrast to my romance novels, in A Song for My Mother, the only thing really hot is the cooking going on in the kitchen!

In this tale, Marly Hanson returns to the small, Michigan town of Dreyerville to fulfill a promise she made her daughter, Katie, who has never met her grandmother.

Marly and her mother, Winnie, have been estranged for years, but dealing with the dark secrets of their past is crucial if they are ever to rebuild the bond of love they once shared. And there is handsome Sheriff Bennett to deal with, and his young son, Ham, and a friend who has fallen into despair. It’s memories of the happy times in the kitchen with her mother when Marly was a little girl that help them find their way back to each other.

One of Marly’s favorite meals is Winnie’s thick beef stew and homemade cheddar-chive biscuits, perfect for a crisp Midwest evening. Cheddar-Chive Biscuits are one of my personal favorite recipes. Hope you enjoy!

Cheddar-Chive Biscuits

Prep time: 35 minutes
Biscuits

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/3 cup butter or vegetable shortening
3/4 -1 cup grated Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup finely chopped chives or scallion tops
3/4 cup milk (or a little less)

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease a flat baking sheet.

2. In a mixing bowl combine flour, salt, sugar (if desired), and baking powder. Mix ingredients well. Add butter or shortening to flour mixture and cut together using a pastry blender, two knives, or your fingers, until mixture is an even consistency. Add Cheddar cheese and chives or scallion tops and mix together thoroughly. Add enough milk to form a soft dough.

3. Place dough on a floured breadboard. Knead 7 to 10 times. Roll dough with a rolling pin to 1/2 inch thickness.

4. Flour a 2 inch round cookie cutter and cut dough into rounds. Transfer to baking sheet and bake for 10-14 minutes or until golden brown.

Yield: 10 to 12 delicious biscuits
